Las Cruces : Deputy shot by partner after transporting inmate to Arizona

A Santa Fe County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot by his partner at a hotel in Las Cruces, N.M., early Tuesday after delivering an inmate to Graham County, Ariz., on a warrant, authorities said.

Las Cruces police arrested Tai Chan, 27, on Tuesday after the shooting of 29-year-old Jeremy Martin. Both deputies were on assignment when the incident took place.

A spokesperson with the county said any unauthorized absence from work for two consecutive days is considered an automatic resignation without notice.

Chan will also not be able to appeal or grievance his termination, per the Santa Fe County handbook.

Chan is charged with an open count of murder. He was arraigned in Magistrate Court in Las Cruces Wednesday.
