Sylwia Rajchel, a 24 year-old Erasmus student from Lublin in eastern Poland, was apparently trying to take a picture “Selfie” of herself with the Puente de Triana in the background.
According to the Spanish-language website 20 minutos, she posed for a self-portrait picture using her mobile phone on the railings by the River Guadalquivir. She then lost her balance and fell seven metres onto a narrow concrete path below, which was once used by fishermen.
The bridge, which was completed in 1852, is officially known as the Puente de Isabel II, and is a well known landmark in the city.
The incident happened just after midnight on Sunday November 2. She was taken to a nearby hospital, but died on Monday.
According to the newspaper, the student had three brothers and was described by a friend as “happy, fun, caring and spontaneous”.
She had been taking a nursing course as an Erasmus student at the University of Murcia, and had spent much of her free time travelling around southern Spain with fellow students.
Previously, she had gone to Cordoba, and was visiting Seville for the weekend with a group of five friends.
