In Longueuil, a preliminary hearing is underway for 27- year-old Nikolas Stefanatos. He is accused of throwing acid in his girlfriend’s face.
Following an argument in August of 2012, Stefanatos sprayed acid into St-Arnauld’s face, leaving her with second- and third-degree burns to her face, arms, neck and back. She was placed in a medically-induced coma for a time, and underwent several skin grafts.
Since then, she underwent reconstructive surgery, thanks to a Florida dermatologist who offered to perform saw her story on Anderson Cooper’s CNN program.
Stefanatos’ trial was due to begin in three weeks. He’ll be sentenced on Dec. 3.
The maximum sentence is 14 years in prison but Kavanagh said she won’t say what she and the defence will recommend to the judge.
“We will have a joint submission which will be submitted at that time,” said Kavanagh.
