The City of Ottawa has restored its Ottawa.ca website, almost 24 hours after an apparent hacker attack Friday night.
The city says it is confident that no corporate of resident information was compromised by the breach, but say users may still experience delays in refresh times for some internet service providers.
In a e-mailed statement, the City said the issues “were related to a third party service provider and have since been resolved.”
The City says residents can continue to access City services by calling 3-1-1.
From late Friday afternoon to early Friday evening, trying to access ottawa.ca resulted in being sent to an image of the dancing banana from the Peanut Butter Jelly Time meme along with a message that addresses an Ottawa Police constable and a link to a twitter account.
There was also a reference to a hashtag which – when followed – leads to claims the hack is linked to the group known as “Anonymous.”
The website later said “This Account Has Been Suspended.”
Police Chief Charles Bordeleau tells CTV Ottawa the service is “actively engaged” regarding the issue.
