Christa Engles Shot By Toddler, Engles was tending to her one-year-old on Monday night when her toddler found the loaded gun under the couch and pulled the trigger, shooting his mother in the head.
According to Tulsa Police Homicide Sgt. Dave Walker, Engles appeared to be changing her 1-year-old child’s diaper when the accidental shooting happened.
“The grandmother arrived home and found the victim along with the children inside the house,” he told Tulsa World. “The victim was found in the front room of the house as if she was changing the 1-year-old’s diaper.”
Police say the boy grabbed a .40-caliber gun from under a couch cushion and fired the fatal shot. Engle’s husband, Brian Engles, was at work when the shooting happened. Police waited for him to get home before publicizing the news.
“I lost my wife to an accident yesterday,” Brian wrote on Facebook. “Don’t forget to tell your loved ones they are loved. You really never know when the last I love you really is the last. It’s a new day, it will be my first without you. I have so much on my mind but it doesn’t matter. I know you loved me, I worship the ground you walked on. I am the luckiest man alive, to have been able to love you. Since the day i met you you have been the best part of me. I love you Precious Angel.”
