A 200-metre stretch of Locarno Beach, between Jericho Beach and Spanish Banks, near Sasamat Street in the Vancouver Westside has been sandbagged to protect low-lying homes near the water from flooding.
[fwdevp preset_id=”8″ video_path=”Tnzl34KWAOQ”]Brian Crowe, the City of Vancouver’s director of water, sewers and district energy, said the structure will stay in place until the new year, which coincides with the end of the king-tide season.
A king tide is a seasonal high tide that generally occurs from November until January.
In 2012, a king tide combined with a storm surge was responsible for the flooding of an area near the Locarno Beach concessions stand, which is near the intersection of Sasamat Street and northwest Marine Drive.
With the region bracing for a storm surge in the next 48 hours and tides comparable to what was experienced in 2012, Crowe said the berm of sandbags should prevent similar flooding.
“We are exercising an abundance of caution,” he said.
