Gunfire at a New Year’s house party shattered the predawn quiet in a sleepy Calgary neighbourhood Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and six wounded.
Calgary Police Duty inspector Quinn Jacques, says they still need to talk to people who saw or heard what happened.
“Investigators have spoken to many witnesses, however, it is believed many more have to come forward. The witnesses we have spoken with so far, have identified themselves and others at the party as members of African communities,” said Jacques.

He says they can’t say whether the victims are known to police.
“I have no information with the respect to who the victim is at this point. When we do an investigation, I can assure you that no stone is left unturned, everyone’s background will be examined that was involved in the offence.”
No arrests have been made yet.
“As far as I know, it was a shooting that occurred in the residence. How it unfolded, or what the cause or catalyst of that was, remains under investigation, and I’m sorry I can’t provide greater detail.”
Officers were called to the area around 5 a.m. Thursday following reports of shots being fired in the 36 hundred block of 19th Avenue S.W.
Neighbours are stunned to learn a shooting happened so close to home Thursday morning.
A man has lived in the area for a couple of years, but he says a New Year’s Day scene of police tape and flashing lights is one he knows all too well.
“It was scary. I lived in Ranchlands a number of years ago and there was a murder – yeah, a domestic dispute on New Year’s Day,” he said. “So here it is 20 some years later the same thing happens and it’s a bummer for the mood of the neighbourhood.”
