70-year-old bullet wound contributes to death of Chicago man.
The Chicago resident died on Sunday from complications from a bullet that he carried in his abdomen for more than seven decades. He was 87 years old.
Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office spokesman Frank Shuftan says an autopsy on Wednesday determined that a gunshot injury caused complications to Tom Buchanan’s abdomen that “ultimately killed him.”
Shufton says the office has no details about when the retired steel worker was shot or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Buchanan’s 82-year-old cousin Mattie Matthews says it happened sometime in the 1940s. She says she remembers her mother and her aunt talking about it but she was never told any details and Buchanan never said much about it.
Matthews says she took Buchanan to the hospital on Saturday because he was suffering abdominal pain and that he died the next day.
