A simple Facebook question has created a social media frenzy over how body image should play a role in today’s toy industry.
A picture posted by Plus Size Modeling last week has people talking.
The group asked fans “Should toy companies start making plus-sized dolls” — and within hours — more than 40,000 people liked the post and thousands commented on the issue.
Here are some comments:
“There is nothing wrong with having the option in Barbie’s bodytype, ” commented Jessica Del Tio. “How bout a curvy in between barbie???done deal, make it, NO FAT, NO SKINNY, A HEALTHY DOLL,” commented Andrew Schrock. “That chin is a little much , but society is now all sizes so I think there’s nothing wrong with it.
Kids these days are so self conscious that maybe this will be the confidence they need,” said za’Nell Fuller. “No one is naturally fat for gods sake, that’s sending the message to girls that it’s ok to look like this and be unhealthy.. How about we stop obsessing about being overweight and teach our children to eat healthy and get out and play…” Elaine Cassin commented.
“Why change the way Barbie looks? I don’t know why people can’t just teach there children to treat everyone with respect no matter what someone looks like and what do Barbies have to do with it..” Elizabeth Guthrie commented. Barbie-manufacturer Mattel has not responded.
