Louie Caldwell sent to Thomas L. King Funeral Home, buried by accident? A coroner says a mix-up at the state crime lab led an Augusta area family to bury the wrong body during a closed-casket funeral.
[fwdevp preset_id=”8″ video_path=”Z2QN_KMpbwA”]The body of Johnny Morgan Lowe III was never returned to Augusta after an autopsy, Salemi said. Instead, the body of Louie Caldwell of Clayton County was buried during a closed-casket graveside service for Lowe in December.
Because the funeral was closed-casket, funeral home officials and the family didn’t realize it wasn’t Lowe’s body in the casket.
Salemi said she found out about the mix-up on Feb. 10 when she got a call from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab.
“They released my paperwork with another man and Johnny is still there,” Salemi said. “I was told my Dr. Chris Sperry, who is the chief medical examiner, was told that an error had been made on her part and he had spoken with the family.”
The GBI told Salemi they will cover the costs of correcting the mistake.
