Despite being closed for more than a year, Edmonton’s former downtown airport was the site of a rough landing Saturday.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, the incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
The pilot, 28-year-old Darryl Zubot, said he was doing aerial photography when he noticed the plane having engine trouble.
“The whole airplane was shaking. I had a massive amount of vibration in the cabin. It was like something just went off.”
Zubot said he tried using the radio but discovered it was dead.
“I turned towards the City Centre Airport because I was quite close to it at that point. That is pretty much the only open area around.”
Zubot deployed his parachute and was able to leave the craft when it landed.
A wind gust then flipped the aircraft over and it sustained a lot of damage.
