Infant dead, four others hospitalized in possible Fort McMurray poisoning

An eight-month-old child is dead and four others are in hospital after possibly being poisoned by a pesticide on Sunday.

RCMP said they were called to assist the local fire department in evacuating one floor of the apartment building at 81 Fraser Avenue around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Two of them, aged two and six were taken to local hospital, while two others, aged four and seven were flown here to the Stollery. All of them are reported in critical condition.

The mother of the children is in hospital in Fort McMurray under observation, while the father is in Edmonton with the other kids.

Everyone was let back into their suites last night after air quality was deemed to be safe. Police say it looks like the chemical was some sort of fumigant, but it’s still early in the investigation.

The identities of the victims are being withheld at the request of family.
