A video shows Seattle Aquarium’s giant octopus “Ink” trying to crawl out of his tank, prompting online speculation as to whether he was attempting an escape or simply exploring his new surroundings.

The cephalopod scales the glass enclosure as spectators can be heard squealing in the background. A young child can be heard saying, “Can we go?” The crafty sea creature gets several tentacles out of the tank before staff on ladders were able to push it back inside.

“Sadly, staff were close by to foil his plans and placed a lid on his tank shortly after,” the person who uploaded the video wrote in the description. “I hope you escape to freedom one day buddy. Or, on my plate.”

Octopuses are considered the most intelligent invertebrates, and are known for climbing out of tanks, opening jars and escaping through small spaces.

    1. Giant… Pacific… Octopus… One of two reasons I doubt I’ll ever swim in the Puget Sound. The first being great whites, people say they’re not here, BUT THERE’S NO WAY THEY’RE NOT.
