Terry Murphy and Rachelle Kennedy planned to get hitched in Vancouver this summer, but unforeseen circumstances — Murphy’s terminal cancer diagnosis — forced a change of plans.
Saturday afternoon, a frail Murphy stood before friends and family at a Bridgeland community centre while the flower girl — his 19-month-old daughter — and Kennedy, walked to meet him.
“It’s amazing, it’s a dream come true,” said Rachelle. “We never thought this day would come.”
At the time of his diagnosis, Terry was told the typical survival rate was mere months. Through numerous surgeries and alternative medicinal treatments, the groom overcame the odds to survive to see his wedding day.
Terry says his will to live is fueled by the time he spends with his 19-month-old daughter Katherine, the flower girl in Saturday’s ceremony.
“Everything becomes a lot clearer when you have a focus point and you know there’s supposed to be an ending for you soon,” said 42-year-old Terry.
Prior to his diagnosis, Terry worked as a self-employed contractor and didn’t qualify for insurance.
Family and friends of Terry and Rachelle have created an online fundraiser in the hope of raising $40,000 for the newlyweds as they continue to battle the disease.
“They’ve been through a lot together,” said Bianca Gonsalves, a friend of the couple. “It’s so nice to see them getting their happy ending. I couldn’t think of two people who deserve it more.”
Terry and Rachelle remain fully aware their time together will likely end soon, but the couple is thankful they were able to share their wedding together with their loved ones, including their young daughter Katherine.
“We don’t focus that he might not be there for her wedding,” said Rachelle. “She was there for his.”
“That’s all that matters.”
