An 84-year-old man has died after a double stabbing in Mississauga on Thursday, police say.
The deceased man’s 80-year-old wife suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.
The stabbings sparked a brief and intense manhunt but police did not say what sparked the attack.
Heavily armed officers with help from the canine unit scoured the area and located a 21-year-old man a short time later north of the home where the attack occurred. The man was taken into custody without incident.
Police did not release his name but said late Thursday that he would be charged with murder and attempted murder and is scheduled to appear Friday morning in Brampton, Ont., court.
Tudos confirmed that three area schools were put in hold and secure as a precaution.
“We had numerous officers on scene,” Tudos said. “When it comes to this type of serious incident, and when we have a suspect on the loose, we obviously take into account the safety of the students and all other community members that live here.”
Police said little about the victims and any potential connection they had with the attacker.
“I’m not sure the dynamics of the family that reside in that house,” Tudos said. “We’re going to be processing the scenes to see what they found and what is connected to the actual incident itself.”
