Jayne Meadows Allen died Sunday at her Encino, California, home, the New York Times reports. She was 95.
“She was not only an extraordinarily gifted actress who could move audiences from laughter to tears and back again all in one scene, but she was the greatest storyteller I have ever known,” her son Bill Allen said.
The actress’s career spanned from Broadway to movies and television, but she was also known for teaming up with her husband Steve Allen, who died in 2000.
She made her Broadway debut in 1941 on comedy Spring Again and appeared in her first movie Undercurrent by 1946.
In the ’50s, Meadows started television game show work, acting as a regular panel member for I’ve Got a Secret between 1952 and 1959, as well as being a guest on What’s My Line? and Password.
Her sister, Audrey Meadows, was also a well-known actress for starring in Honeymooners and the pair made several records together as the Meadows Sisters for RCA Victor.
Jayne Meadows Allen is survived by her son Bill, three grandchildren and stepsons from Allen’s first marriage Steve Jr, Brian and David.
