Adebola Shoyoye gets 90 days’ jail time for Ultracuts crash that killed Kendall Wiebe

A Winnipeg man who crashed his vehicle into a Crestview hair salon after he confused the gas pedal with the brake, killing one woman and seriously injuring another, was such a bad driver he should not have been allowed behind the wheel, a judge said Thursday.

In April 2012, Adebola Shoyoye mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, crashing through the window of Ultra Cuts Salon on Portage Avenue.

Kendall Wiebe, 27, died and another woman in the salon was seriously injured.

“It seems like a slap on the wrist to me,” said Steve Cancilla, Wiebe’s partner.

In the seven years leading up to that crash, Shoyoye was involved in 10 different crashes, and he was found to be at fault in seven of those.

In his ruling, Justice Chris Martin called Shoyoye a very poor driver.

“There was little doubt he would have another accident. The only question was how and when,” said Justice Martin. “He did not grasp, or did not accept, that he was a bad driver, a dangerous driver who needed to stop driving.”

The judge acknowledged that Shoyoye did not deliberately hit the gas instead of the brake and said that was a consideration in the 90-day sentence.

Shoyoye will be able to serve his jail time on weekends.

    1. A very light sentence, even for an accidental death. That this man will be allowed to ever drive again is shocking. Is this what happens when you kill with a car? Easy sentence, back at the wheel in a matter of months? Disgraceful. I don’t believe in long jail terms for unintentional crimes, but this man should never be allowed to drive again.
