Kalee Scolatti, news director at KTMF-KWYB in Missoula and Butte-Bozeman, was one of two killed in a triple shooting May 6. Scolatti had spent a decade at the ABC-Fox pair, which is owned by Cowles Montana Media.
A statement from KTMF Television said Scolatti grew up in Missoula and graduated with honors from the University of Montana Journalism school in 2005.
It added that she was kind, passionate and that her co-workers are heartbroken. Scolatti leaves behind three children.
The other person killed was 46-year-old Anthony Dupras, believed to be a friend of Scolatti.
The name of the apparent shooter has not been released.
The shooting happened at 314 Brooks street around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. Officers found 34-year-old Kalee Scolatti and 46-year-old Anthony Dupras dead inside the home. A 36-year-old man was in critical condition.
Sergeant Travis Welsh with the Missoula Police Department says evidence suggests that the 36-year-old man shot Scolatti and Dupras with a handgun before shooting himself in the head. As of Thursday morning, he was in critical condition at St. Patrick Hospital.
“At this point we have served a search warrant at the house. The scene has been processed, and evidence has been noted and evaluated,” Welsh said. “Now we’re in the process of trying to determine a motive and a reason for it. Also trying to determine the origin of the weapon.”
That weapon was a handgun, which was found at the scene. Police investigated until about 3 a.m. The relationships of the three have not been released, but Welsh says evidence suggests that Dupras was a friend of Scolatti’s, and arrived at the house after the other two were already there. They say Scolatti may have called Dupras to come to the house before the shooting occurred.
“There are numerous unanswered questions. And unfortunately there’s nobody that was involved that’s in a position to tell us what happened. So we are trying to piece together, as best we can, the chain of events that’s led up to what we discovered at 6:40 yesterday afternoon,” Welsh said.
There will be a vigil tonight to remember the two victims. It will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church located at 202 Brooks Street at 8 p.m.
