Scott Stapp: ‘I Have Bipolar Disorder’! Beginning last November, he released a video where he claimed he was “under some kind of pretty vicious attack.” Stapp is now opening up about the ongoing saga (which included several video confessions, as well as a 911 call by his wife Jaclyn in which she referenced threats he made about President Obama), in a new interview with People, where he revealed he has bipolar disorder.
He is now in recovery after those closest to him watched his spiral for three months.”I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse,” he saied. “I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car.”
“In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS, and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism,” he added of his behavior at that time. “All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind.”
Reflecting on the events of that time, he added, “I’m lucky to be alive.”
Stapp eventually went to a dual diagnostic facility where he entered an intensive program. He is currently in therapy and takes medication for the disorder. Additionally, he is in a 12-step program and has a sponsor. “Nothing is more important than my sobriety.” he said.
Initially, however, Stapp was surprised by the bipolar diagnosis. “It was hard to process,” he said. “There’s a stigma associated with it. But [my wife] Jaclyn kept telling me, ‘Embrace it. We love you.’ It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer.”
