Man dies in southwest Missouri after venomous snake bites both of his legs.
He was Gilbert DeLeon, 37, of Nixa.
It happened Friday afternoon while DeLeon was wading along the Delaware Access Area of the James River near Nixa. He was bitten twice.
According to Christian County Coroner Brad Cole, DeLeon’s girlfriend wanted to take him in to get medical attention, but DeLeon told her he couldn’t afford a doctor and tried to lance the wounds himself.
His girlfriend told investigators that DeLeon was lethargic the rest of the evening and she realized Saturday morning that he had died in his sleep.
Cole says there won’t be an autopsy. A toxicology test will take about eight weeks but Cole isn’t sure it will determine what kind of snake bit DeLeon.

I don’t go in rivers.
If you get snake bit by any kind of snake you should go to the emergency room immediately. Most people can’t tell what kind of snake it is and even a non-poisonous snake can cause a bad infection. Snakes are just bad news.
