Body of father recovered from Brampton lake : Police

Police say they have found the body of a man who went missing in Brampton’s Professors Lake after he entered the water to help his daughter.

The 40-year-old man was at Professor’s Lake, near Torbram Dr. and Bovaird Dr. E., with his two girls, 5 and 10, when trouble struck around 11:45 a.m., Peel Regional Police Const. Thomas Ruttan said.

“They waded out from the shore to play on some rocks in an area of the lake that is not designated for swimming and one of the young girls slipped into the water,” Ruttan said.

The father quickly waded and helped his daughter climb out to safety, but then he disappeared beneath the water, he said.

“There were witnesses who saw him go under,” Ruttan said, explaining some bystanders dove into the water and looked for the girls’ father but were unable to locate him.

He said the man-made lake, which was once a gravel pit, is shallow up to the rocks but then “it drops off quite dramatically.”

Emergency crews arrived soon after and search unsuccessfully along the surface of the lake from their rescue boats.

After a brief delay because of lightning, a police dive team ultimately recovered the man’s lifeless body late in the afternoon.

“It’s just so tragic,” Ruttan said. “And completely avoidable.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
