Cody, Dachshund eaten by alligator at St. Marks Refuge

Alligator eats Cody the dachshund at a Florida wildlife refuge despite his owners’ brave efforts to rescue him.

An 8-foot alligator crawled out of a pond in Florida, crossed a grassy area and grabbed a man’s 11-year-old dachshund as he was preparing his boat to leave, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. Mike Karris and his fiancée ran into the water in an attempt to save the dog, named Cody, but were unable to rescue him.

The incident took place Saturday in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge south of Tallahassee.

Karris said, “The whole thing, start to finish, didn’t last five seconds and the dog wasn’t on the ground for more than a minute,” according to the report.

He estimated the alligator came out of the pond, crossed 10 feet of grass and gravel and then went onto the pavement where the boat was parked, the story said.
