Sherri Shepherd Opens Up About Bitter Custody Battle & Divorce.
Sherri Shepherd has stayed pretty silent throughout her nasty split from Lamar Sally and the custody battle that ensued over the child they delivered via surrogate.
The star made headlines when she refused to claim the child they planned to share and now she’s opening up about what really went down.
“My situation was a sense of, I didn’t state what I needed and what I wanted and what I didn’t want for being scared of somebody leaving the relationship,” the 48-year-old actress told People of her situation.
“There are consequences to everything, but I was scared to say, ‘That’s not going to work for me. I don’t want that,'” she added during her Aug. 12 interview.
Sherri and her second husband, Lamar, 44, separated after nearly three years of marriage in May 2014. Before their split, the couple planned to have a child via surrogate — using Lamar’s sperm and another woman’s egg — until the TV star had a change of heart just a few months into the surrogate’s pregnancy. In April, a judge ruled Sherri is the legal mother of the now one-year-old baby boy, who is being raised by Lamar.
“I am appealing the ruling that happened and he gets his settlement every month. He’s happy. There nothing I can do. It’s out of my hands. You move on and I have a son. I have to take care of him so everything is good,” the former The View cohost said, referring to her 10-year-old son, Jeffrey, from her first marriage to Jeff Tarpley.
During a previous interview with Closer Weekly, Sherri confessed maintaining a positive attitude has helped her get through this tough time. “Sometimes things don’t work out and you find out the person you’re with is a completely different person. But I’m working through it. I refuse to let anything hold me down,” she said.
