Visits to the emergency department for anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can be life threatening, nearly doubled over 7 years as awareness improved, a new Canadian report suggests.

Emergency department visits for both allergies and anaphylaxis rose to over seven thousand a year by 2014.

A jump from just over five thousand in 2009.

Visits were the highest during the Summer months due to a change in routine and influx in the number of hives and insect stings.

Canadian allergists recommend the use of an epinephrine auto-injector in the event of a reaction or that you contact emergency services.
