Apple has released a ‘Move to iOS’ app on Google’s Play Store, intended on helping people move to its phones — but which has had the effect of upsetting many Android users.
The Move to iOS app in the Google Play store will transfer some data from Android phones running version 4.0 and up to newer iPhones, iPods, and iPads running iOS 9.
The app can’t be comprehensive—iOS and Android have different app stores and ecosystems, after all, and purchases made in Google Play aren’t going to apply in the App Store. But it will move over your contacts, texts, pictures and videos, bookmarks, e-mail accounts, and calendars from your old phone to your new one.
When you’re setting up your iDevice, there’s a new option to transfer data from Android. This will generate a 10-digit code that you type into the Move to iOS app on your Android phone. The two devices will then establish a connection, and you’ll be asked what you want to move over. Once you’ve transferred everything, your iDevice may ask you for the password to any e-mail accounts that were transferred—otherwise, it seems mostly straightforward.
