Saskatchewan: Youth to be banned from tanning beds this fall

If you are under the age of 18 you will soon be prohibited from using tanning in beds in Saskatchewan.

On November 1st regulations to prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds for youth under the age of 18 will go into effect.

The new provincial regulations will apply to tanning facilities and to businesses that offer indoor tanning services, such as gyms and spas.

The government announced its intention to implement new rules back in March, after consultations with stakeholders and businesses and looking to other jurisdictions.

“This step will help to protect youth from the health risks associated with indoor tanning,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said in a statement this morning.

“The regulations represent a workable, practical approach to this issue.”

Saskatchewan Cancer Agency president Scott Livingstone called the move a “positive step forward in cancer prevention.”

“Skin cancer is a deadly disease and it is important that young people are aware of the risks associated with tanning and tanning beds,” he said.
