Friday’s 20-vehicle pileup on Highway 401 in Whitby has claimed a fourth victim, a 10-year-old-boy, who police say has died of his injuries in hospital on Sunday.
Police confirm the boy is the brother of a 12-year-old who died shortly after the crash.
The Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a massive collision on westbound Hwy. 401 east of Lake Ridge Rd. at 10:30 p.m. Friday involving 20 vehicles, including three transport trucks. One of the transport trucks failed to slow down while approaching a construction site and collided with the traffic in front of it.
Three people, a 12-year-old boy in one vehicle and a man and woman in another, were pronounced dead on scene. Sixteen others were taken to hospital, five with critical injuries.
The 10-year-old boy, the brother of the 12-year-old, died in hospital Sunday.
Four people are still in hospital, one of them still in critical condition.
Police have not released the names of the deceased.
