Leonardo DiCaprio, Paramount option Volkswagen scandal book proposal

According to reports the studio and DiCaprio’s Appian Way have optioned a four-page book proposal about the ongoing crisis at the German car manufacturer with a view to a feature adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the star acquired the rights to Jack Ewing’s book proposal, despite the fact that it’s yet to hit shelves.

Ewing covered the story of Volkswagen’s decision to install software to cheat emissions standards tests for the New York Times when it broke back in September.

He then signed a six-figure deal with publishers Norton in October, after which the film rights were immediately bought by DiCaprio.

The Oscar-nominee, who has produced films including The Wolf of Wall Street and the forthcoming The Revenant, is an ardent environmentalist.

Last year the actor was appointed a UN ambassador for climate change and runs his own non-profit organisation, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation

Back in July, DiCaprio raised a staggering $40 million to help preserve endangered species and their environments at his second annual fundraising gala.

Speaking at the event, he said: “We’ve decimated our forests, wildlands, polluted and over-fished our rivers and oceans; all the key ecosystems that not only serve as a home to our planet’s biodiversity, but also make life here for us possible.

“I’m incredibly proud to be part of a night that will allow us to do so much to protect the planet.”
