It’s best to tread carefully around those who take their coffee black as they’re more likely to be psychopaths, new research has suggested.
Scientists from the University of Innsbruck in Austria studied 953 American adults and found that those who preferred more bitter tastes in foods scored higher on a series of personality questionnaires that measured qualities like narcissism, aggression and sadism, the tendency to enjoy inflicting pain on others.
The study, which will be published in the journal “Appetite,” also notes that participants who reported a liking for other bitter foods like radishes, celery, beer and tonic water were also more likely to exhibit psychopathic traits.
“The present research has demonstrated that bitter taste preferences are associated with more pronounced malevolent personality traits, especially robustly with everyday sadism,” the study says.
Conversely, participants who preferred sweet foods like candies and cake tended to score high on “agreeableness.”
In regards to health, a black cup of coffee may be the best kind. Those who don’t add sugars and creams also don’t consume added calories and fat.
