The World Health Organization has deemed that processed meats — such as bacon, sausages and hot dogs — cause cancer.
Twenty-two scientists from all over the world met and concluded that processed meat is as dangerous as cigarettes. But, this new report doesn’t mean a total pork ban.
“Food may not always be as healthy as we think it is, but we eat it anyway,” said hot dog lover Nikki Woolsey.
Count Woolsey among the Hank’s Haute Dog lovers who think a new report linking processed meats to cancer is a bunch of baloney!
“It’s kind of unreal that that they’re putting it at the same level as tobacco,” said Ed Drew, who eats meat four times a week.
Loic Le Marchand is one of 22 doctors and scientists behind the report. He’s a professor at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. He says the writing has been on the wall for ham, bacon and sausage for years — if you eat too much, you’re risking health problems.
“When the meat is processed or curing the chemicals form in the meat or body, that may increase the risk of cancer,” said Le Marchand.
The WHO even placed processed meats in the same category as tobacco and arsenic saying eating meats like SPAM and bacon increase the risk of some cancers. But, Dr. Le Marchand offers this perspective.
“Actually, some studies suggest 34,000 deaths globally where smoking is responsible for a million deaths globally, so it’s very different type of risk,” said Le Marchand.
It’s news that’s a little more palatable for people in Hawaii who love their SPAM.
The bottom line — this new report doesn’t mean you need to stop eating all red and processed meat. Doctors say eating a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and exercise is the key to a longer and healthier life.
