In a prison interview with ABC’s 20/20 Angelika Graswald maintains she did not kill her fiancé during a kayak trip in upstate New York.
Graswald, of Poughkeepsie, allegedly admitted to tampering with the kayak used by Viafore, during an April 19 trip to Bannerman Island, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
According to ABC, co-anchor “Elizabeth Vargas questions the only living person who really knows what happened that night — Angelika Graswald — in her first (televised) interview from jail.
“Graswald tells Vargas why she is heard on the interrogation tape telling police, ‘I wanted him dead and now he’s gone.’”
She removed a plug from Viafore’s kayak so it would fill with water, and she moved his paddle away from him after it capsized as he struggled “to stay afloat” in the 46-degree river, the DA’s Office has said. Graswald allegedly told police she “felt good knowing he was going to die.”
The “20/20” report also includes the interrogation video and 911 call, as well as interviews with Graswald’s two close friends. The program will also feature a legal roundtable discussion and kayak expert.
Graswald, who has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, remains in Orange County Jail on $3 million bail or $9 million bond.
