Burt Reynolds is still hurting over his split from Sally Field more than three decades ago, insisting she remains “the love of my life.”
The pair dated in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but their five-year romance ended up resulting in a split which was so nasty, that they didn’t talk for two decades.
Burt Reynolds has now said that he has huge regrets when it comes to their relationship and wishes he could turn back time.
“I miss her terribly. Even now, it’s hard on me,” he said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I don’t know why I was so stupid. Men are like that, you know.”
He added: “You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.”
The actor revealed that he blames himself for his poor track record with women, going on to say: “It’s going to be awful sometimes. And they say, ‘Oh, no, you’re not. That’s not you.’
“And I say, ‘It is me, and I don’t want to be that way. I hate that guy. But you’re going to see him, and I hope you don’t run away from me.’
“They always say, ‘I’ll be able to handle it.’ They can’t handle it. And they don’t understand what they’ve done. And it’s not them. It’s me.”
The Smokey and the Bandit star – who recently put his 3.4 acre estate in Tequesta, Florida on the market after being declared bankrupt – is set to release his new memoir, But Enough About Me, on November 17.
Meanwhile Sally, has been keeping busy as per usual, and was pictured attending the Women’s Media Center Women’s Media Awards in New York last night.
The 68-year-old looked youthful as ever as she posed for photographers at the lavish event, wearing a chic grey trouser suit, which she teamed with a cream top.
Like Burt, Sally is also single, after going through two divorces.
