A deluge of generosity descended on a Florida McDonald’s on Wednesday with a pay-it-forward chain that lasted through 250 vehicles.
According to an ABC News report, Torie Keene of Lakeland, Florida, told the cashier at her local McDonald’s drive-thru that she wanted to pay for the meal of the person behind her.
The cashier, Marisabel Figueroa, told ABC News that Keene specifically asked her to tell the person behind her “Merry Christmas,” when explaining the meal had already been paid for.
Figueroa told ABC News that the passenger behind Keene was so moved by Keene’s gesture that she decided to pay for the meal of the car behind her.
Keene’s gesture set off a chain reaction of people paying it forward that lasted almost the entire length of Figueroa’s shift—from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“I just kept giving everyone the same message, and they were all so stunned and so happy,” Figueroa told ABC News. “One lady even paid for the meals of the three cars behind her.”
Once a local news station reported about the pay-it-forward chain, Keene reached out to Figueroa on Facebook, saying she didn’t expect the gesture to continue like it did, and that she was “only trying to brighten someone’s day,” ABC News reports.
