GOP Debate Lineup: Rand Paul fails to make main stage for Thursday’s GOP debate

GOP candidate lineup announced for Fox Business Network debate.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina will not appear on the primetime stage for the Republican Party’s sixth presidential debate later this week.

Fox Business Network announced the lineup for the debate on Monday night, dealing a blow to both candidates just three weeks before Iowa’s presidential caucuses start the nomination contests.

Just seven candidates – the smallest GOP group so far – will be featured in the main event on Thursday night, based on recent polling data.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Ohio Governor John Kasich will form the lineup.

Mr Paul and Mrs Fiorina were invited to take part in an earlier “undercard” debate in South Carolina, but the Kentucky Senator said he would skip the faceoff.

He told CNN: “An artificial designation as being in the second tier is something we can’t accept.

“I won’t participate in anything that’s not the first tier.”

Fox Business Network, which is hosting the debate, said the lineup would include the top six candidates in the five most recent national polls, as well as any candidate in the top five in either Iowa or New Hampshire.

Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum will also appear in the undercard debate.
