Researchers stumble on rare find in Banff National Park

Researchers stumbled upon the first bat hibernacula ever recorded in the park.

They were surprised to find evidence of a bat cave, first ever discovered in Banff, Yoho, or Kootenay National Parks.

Wildlife Ecologist Anne Forshner says they got lucky, hitting pay dirt in the first cave they explored.

“So we were quite thrilled to find evidence of that overwintering there.” she says. “But we’re also looking in other areas as well, other caves and mines, and we’re hoping to find more evidence.

Forshner says they suspect this particular cave was used during hibernation by the little brown myotis bat. Forshner says they’re goal is to learn more about the species of bats in Banff, Yoho and Kootenay Parks, where they’re found and how many there are.
