Virginia McLaurin: Woman aged 106 dances for joy when she meets US President

Virginia McLaurin thought she would never live to see the inside of the White House. But on Thursday, Feb. 18, the 106-year-old African American woman traveled to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and posed for a photo with the first black president and his wife.

“It’s an honor, it’s an honor,” said Virginia McLaurin Sunday as the centenarian hopped across the room into President Barack Obama’s arms.

“I thought I would never live to get in the White House,” she said. “And I tell you I am so happy.”

Virginia McLaurin, who was born in 1909, couldn’t contain her excitement and busted a move with the president and first lady, who said, “I wanna be like you when I grow up.”

In 2014, McLaurin recorded a video about her dream to meet the presidential couple, saying, “I didn’t think I’d ever live to see a colored president.”

Two years later, she was proudly holding hands with the Obamas.

“A black president, and a black wife,” McLaurin said, gazing at them. “And I’m here to celebrate black history.”
