Toyota Canada has announced the recall of 400,124 vehicles equipped with airbag inflators that were manufactured by Takata. In some cases, the front passenger airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure during airbag deployment.
The recall took place after an accident that took place in Canada killing two passengers in a 2011 Toyota RAV4. Transport Canada reviewed the accident and replicated the crash stating that both front passengers survived the test crash but the rear passengers did not.
Transport Canada stated, “During the test, both rear seatbelts severed and both crash dummies sustained potentially deadly injuries.” The issue is that during a severe front impact, the rear seatbelts may come into contact with the steel structure of the seat and get severed rendering them inoperable. So far, 148,966 vehicles have been identified as part of the recall in Canada which is specific to vehicles built between 2006-2012.
This new recall, which supersedes recalls 2013113, 2014224, 2015197, and 2015269, affects the following models:
Lexus SC 430 (2002-2010);
Toyota Corolla (2003-2008);
Toyota Matrix (2003-2008);
Toyota Sequoia (2002-2007);
Toyota Tundra (2003-2006).
