Snapchat ‘Speed Filter’ Led to Georgia Car Crash, Lawsuit

A Georgia teen is being sued for allegedly driving distractedly, using Snapchat as she sped into another car at 107 miles per hour.

Both Snapchat and driver Christal McGee are named in the lawsuit filed in Spalding County, Georgia, by Wentworth and Karen Maynard, according to a civil complaint.

The law suit says that Christal McGee, who had three passenger in her Mercedes C320, was take selfies using Snapchat’s speed filter, which awards a ‘trophy’ to users who post pics showing off their speed.

It argues the filter ‘facilitated McGee’s excessive speeding’ and ‘distracted’ her in the moments leading up to the crash.

Wentworth was left permanently brain damaged by the incident but there is no information on injuries suffered by Christal McGee or her passengers.

The former Uber driver has been unable to work since the crash, the suit says.
McGee even took a snap after the crash, showing her in an ambulance under the caption ‘Lucky to be alive’.

The lawsuit also names McGee as a defendant and demands unspecified damages from Snapchat.

‘We’ll see to it that Christal McGee is held responsible, but we also want to see Snapchat held responsible,” T. Shane Peagler, one of Maynard’s attorneys, said in a statement reported by New York Daily News.

‘This is a product liability case because Snapchat put something very dangerous in the marketplace without any warnings or safeguards, and basically said, whatever happens, happens.’

Snapchat recently added a warning to its speed filter, telling users: ‘Please, DO NOT Snap and drive.’
