Music superstar Prince’s estate topic of court hearing Monday

A probate hearing about Prince’s estate is expected to start Monday.

The hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. in Carver County District Court.

Barring any objections from the other five surviving siblings, the Carver County judge will likely go along with the request. The move will allow the bank to manage affairs at Paisley Park. However, its role would be limited while the court determines an appropriate Personal Representative.

Monday’s hearing, barring any surprises or challenges, will likely be fairly short. However, the process of dividing the estate should take years.

In addition to divvying up the estate, the other big issue going forward is whether Prince’s family will have control over his image and likeness. This control, referred to as the “right of publicity,” could be worth just as much as the estate. Yet, Minnesota has no state law automatically transferring control.

In the meantime, outside Paisley Park, Sunday was one of the busiest days yet. Fox 9 spotted license plates from California, Wyoming, Ontario, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and other states.

Antoinette Thompson, visiting from Oklahoma City, told Fox 9 “sometimes I wish you could give a person their roses before they pass away.”

Jeff Johnson, visiting from Atlanta, said Prince, “was blessed. And he blessed us with his music.”
