Trooper Luke Bonin from the State Police Dartmouth Barracks was reportedly driving along when he spotted a woman in Fall River holding a sign, asking for help.
Perched on the bumper of his patrol car, police officer Luke Bronin enjoys a picnic with a young woman seated on the grass.
But mother-of-four Lynn Murphy wasn’t a friend or colleague. In fact he had only just met her that afternoon.
He noticed her begging by the side of the road in Massachusetts and carried on driving.
But as soon as he got to a sandwich shop, he picked up two meals and made his way back.
Instead of giving her a hard time for ‘panhandling’ , which is the American term for public begging, he asked her which of the meals she would rather have.
Then they sat down to enjoy their picnic.
It was an ordinary moment; just a small act of kindness during the working day.
At least, it would have been if there hadn’t been a photographer watching who took a picture from the other side of the road.
Since then, Trooper Bonin has gone viral with more than 100,000 people liking the photo.
A Massachusetts State Police spokesman said yesterday:
After reaching out to Trooper Bonin, he was a bit surprised that someone had taken his photo, stating that he wasn’t seeking or expecting any publicity for it. But we pressed him, and he very reluctantly told us how he ended up sitting on his cruiser’s bumper that day sharing lunch with a stranger.
‘We have extraordinary troopers on the Massachusetts State Police who conduct themselves honourably, and perform selfless acts, every day. Most times, it goes unnoticed. But not this day.’
Lynn told WBZ-TV she felt like someone cared after the officer sat down for lunch with her.
‘He didn’t know me from Adam. I’m a homeless panhandler. And he took the time out of his day, went and bought us lunch, and had it with me,’ she said.

This is how you show respect for people caught up in today’s economy.
Such a shame our former governor cannot find homes for it’s beautiful residence yet gave away so many available living places to all those freeloaders that made their way here.
This trooper deserves more recognition so people hear his story rather than the negative stories of officers looking bad for defending themselves in bad situations.
Media needs to stop painting our officers in the negative as well. Stop plastering the bad and start plastering the good. Your getting our brave men and women in uniform killed.
Now let’s get this young lady in a home of her own like all our legal citizens deserve.
Your comment was lovely….at least until the second sentence. Then you return to praising the trooper and police officers in general….again, lovely. Then you go back, yet again to some political rant about your governor and the “freeloaders”, which I assume to mean “from Mexico”?? If so, and while I agree that folks should enter the country legally, that just isn’t reality. Even sadder, it is VERY OFTEN those “freeloaders” who are willing to work tens time as hard and and long as our “legal citizens”. While not in every case, it is true in many. I speak from experience. My job as a project manager for a large company which uses legal installers from Mexico, affords me some knowledge on this subject. Our Mexican installers work harder than our US citizens across the board. They will take any job on any day of the week, while the US guys complain about having to work weekends. Did you ever stop to think that many of these people come here illegally out of desperation? They cannot find work where they live. Did you ever stop to think of all the US citizens who laze about on welfare? So, back to this story…..do we know the background of the young woman on the road? No. Do we know what services/assistance the trooper may or may not have offered? No. I think your comment assumes alot that we just don’t have the facts about. While it could have been the “economy” it could also have been a plethora of other things…..crime, drugs, spousal abuse, or just plain bad luck. I AGREE with your praise of our police officers and that they should always get our support when they are forced to use lethal means to stop crime. Yes, this trooper deserves more recognition, but not for helping a “legal citizen”…..rather, for helping a human being. Nothing I hate more than reading a nice story like this and then going to the comments where there are ALWAYS people with nothing but bigotry and politics on their minds. I respectfully ask you to look at your comments in a different light. The US has a huge number of “freeloaders” and most illegal immigrants (most, not all) come here to make a better life…..but, I suppose you’d rather see someone “build a big wall”…sad.
Why, this is what a republican would call a taker. I think it is necessary that we care for the less fortunate. America is stronger when the people are healthy, housed and united!! We should be working to be united not separated!! God bless America!!!
