‘Ghostbusters’ star Leslie Jones fights back against racism on Twitter

Since the release of the new “Ghostbusters” movie, Leslie Jones, one of the film’s stars, has endured a continuous onslaught of racist tweets and hateful attacks. But unlike many people harassed on Twitter, Jones has made a point of fighting back.

She reached the decision after a number of Twitter users attacked her account with racist comments filled with hateful accusations about her appearance and more. Later, an account posing as Jones posted a number of hate-filled Tweets, duping some viewers into believing she was behind them and sparking more backlash.

A hashtag initiative — #LoveForLeslieJ — rose in support of the actress, and Deadline points out that Sony and some of her peers eventually convinced Twitter to suspend some of the accounts. However, it proved to be too much for the “Saturday Night Live” star, who described the experience as “a personal hell.”

Directed by Paul Feig, from a script by Feig and Katie Dippold, and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, “Ghostbusters” is now in theaters.
