West Vancouver councillor Michael Lewis dies of lung cancer

District of West Vancouver councillor Michael Lewis has died of lung cancer. He was diagnosed in June.

District Mayor Michael Smith says he was the voice of reason and common sense.

“He was a very quiet and charming guy,” Smith says.

“He had a strong belief in fiscal responsibility and keeping taxes reasonable and making sure waste was something we were constantly trying to eliminate in the district.”

Smith says Lewis was also very active with several non-profit organizations.

He was the president of the Autism Society of B.C. and Canada, and BC Boys Choir.

“He loved to travel, he was very close to his wife and two sons, and he was just a very fine man who served the community in other ways besides being on council. He actually received the Governor Generals Diamond Jubilee Medal a few years ago for community service.”

He had served as councillor since 2008.
