A kayaker happened to be using a telephoto lens when a mother humpback whale breached extremely close by, resulting in once-in-a-lifetime footage.
The was video posted to YouTube by Wildcoast Adventures on Monday.
It was taken in the Von Donop Inlet on the north end of Cortes Island in the Discovery Islands.
The group had been observing the mom nursing her calf from a safe distance, about 100m or more, when the whales dove down.
The whales closed the distance in a huge hurry, surfacing just meters from where the kayakers were stopped.
In posting the video on-line, a short description reads ” As you can see in this Video they can close the distance very fast and they are unpredictable.
and adds “Remember ” See a Blow Go Slow.””
