The Montreal SPCA is expected to be in court this morning to challenge Montreal’s new animal control bylaw, which includes banning pit bulls.
Last week in Montreal legislation was passed banning pit bulls from being adopted in the region.
Stephanie Burt is a pit bull advocate and an administrator of the Responsible Pit Bull Owners of Atlantic Canada Facebook group.
She says a ban doesn’t make sense, that they haven’t had an issue and it’s really about how the dogs are raised and the owners.
The legislation in Montreal means that current pit bull owners can keep their dogs, but no pit bulls can be adopted from here forward.
The dogs that haven’t been adopted will be put down if they can’t find a home outside Montreal, which may be difficult given the number of pit bull bans across the country.
Burt says that our province would be foolish to follow suit.
She says she hopes Newfoundland and Labrador sees that the ban is unjust, and given that this is one of the last provinces that doesn’t have breed specific legislation, they realize banning certain breeds is not the way to go.
