An eight-car commuter train derailed early Monday at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, injuring 32 people on board after it failed to stop at an underground station at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
According to a Chicago Fire officer, the front car landed on an escalator and stairs of the airport, one of the busiest in the US.
No serious injuries were reported and all the victims, mostly with bruises, were taken to four local hospitals.
A spokesman was quoted saying that the train was likely been travelling “too fast”.
Transit authority spokesman Brian Steele said that it was not clear how fast the train was moving, but the speed could be the possible cause of the crash.
“It’s evident the train was going faster than it should,” he was quoted at the scene.
“Fortunately nobody was on the staircase. Anybody on the staircase probably would have been killed,” he added.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the derailment.
The investigators will review security footage as well as interviewing CTA employees before determine the cause of the crash.
Meantime, the train service on part of the line will be suspended for up to 24 hours. Shuttles buses are available to carry airport passengers to and from a nearby Blue Line station until the train service resume.
