Jonathan Black arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm and mischief.
Jonathan Black, 38, was arrested Thursday and charged with assault causing bodily harm and mischief under $5,000, Toronto Police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said Friday.
CBC News reported Black is accused of breaking his girlfriend’s wrist.
His defence lawyer, Robb MacDonald, told the Sun he is under instructions to not comment on the allegations.
Black appeared in court on Friday but is expected to remain in custody until his next court appearance on Monday morning. “Sadly, it’s looking like that’s the case,” MacDonald said.
The lawyer added he will get instructions on Monday about how Black plans on responding to the charges.
“But I would expect that he will be fighting these charges,” MacDonald said.
This isn’t the first time Black has seen the inside of a courtroom as an accused.
In 2011, he was accused of harassing his ex-girlfriend. Black pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking his probation after he was found in the same downtown bar as his ex.
Because Black spent 16 days in pre-trial custody, he was given a suspended sentence and two years probation for failing to comply with his recognizance.
In 2008, he was fined $2,000 for a hit-and-run downtown.
His father has famously faced his own legal troubles.
In 2007, Conrad Black was found guilty in the United States of scheming to siphon off millions of dollars from the sale of newspapers owned by Hollinger, where he was chief executive and chairman.
Two of his three fraud convictions were later voided, and his sentence was shortened. He was released in May 2012 after having served more than three years in prison.
