‘Attack on Titan’ Season 2 to premiere in April 2017, Report

Funimation® Entertainment is proud to announce its acquisition of “Attack on Titan” Season 2 and the return of the worldwide hit anime series which was first introduced to U.S. and Canadian audiences in 2013. “Attack on Titan” Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in April 2017 in Japan.

Hajime Isayama’s story has been adapted as a novel, an anime series, video games, and even a live action feature film. Another big cross-cultural promotion of the popular series was announced at New York Comic Con in 2015 that touted top talent from the comics industry, including Gail Simone and Scott Snyder. There had even been talk of a TV series in development, but plans appear to have been scrapped for now.

The anime series premiered in 2013, but the 25-episode run has left fans in limbo for over three years now. 2015’s live action film garnered a lukewarm reception, leaving fans of the series clamoring for new content. Set in a futuristic world where humans are at the mercy of giant, man-eating beings known as Titans, the series follows cadets from one of the three branches of government that are left to protect humanity.

After the initial announcement of a second season at the Tokyo International Forum over the summer, a more solid release date has now been confirmed. Funimation, the company that acquired the rights to Attack on Titan, announced that fans can expect the season two premiere in Japan in April of 2017. The Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Funimation, Mike DuBoise, is thrilled about the acquisition and credits fan passion for keeping the series alive. In an official statement, the COO and EVP said:

“’Attack on Titan’ is one of those rare titles that has reached true cult status with anime fans. It’s been more than 3 years since the last episode of ‘Attack on Titan’ Season 1, and passion from its fans has not waned. We look forward to premiering it on FunimationNow.”

Funimation officially picked up the rights to Attack on Titan from Wit Studio on December 8, 2016; where they also announced plants for the popular series’ long-awaited second season. Funimation founder and CEO, Gen Fukunaga, echo’s DuBoise’s excitement about the continuation of the series, saying:

“’Attack on Titan’ became an instant hit since it first streamed in 2013 and we are thrilled to bring fans the long-awaited Season 2 of the series. ’Attack on Titan’ is truly a worldwide phenomenon that has continued to grow at a non-stop pace. Fans can look forward to an exciting second season.”

Funimation has partnered with Kodansha, a comic publisher, to distribute the series in the US and Canada; however there’s no word yet on how long after the initial Japanese release fans elsewhere in the world will have to wait.
