If your Facebook battery usage has been especially bad recently, it has apparently been fixed server-side.
Facebook this week issued a server-side fix to a bug in its Messenger app that rapidly depleted some Android users’ batteries. This, after several users complained on Twitter and Reddit that it seemed like a recent code change was impacting battery life.
Swedish software developer Anders Ljusberg summed up the bug succinctly in a tweet on Tuesday: “Did something happen to the @facebook Android apps? Suddenly my phone is super hot (not in a good way) and battery dies after 3 hours. :(“
On Reddit, there was a similar complaint on the site’s forum dedicated to the Nexus 6P, with one user saying Tuesday that it appeared the Messenger app had consumed 16 percent of their battery since the phone’s last charge.
Within hours, the company fixed the bug, executive David Marcus said on Twitter. He declined to say what was causing it, and instead encouraged Android users to restart the Messenger app to get the latest server-side code push.
Late last year, security software maker Avast named the main Facebook app, Instagram and Facebook Messenger among the 10 most resource-greedy apps on Android, consuming more battery, storage space and bandwidth than other apps on the platform.
