Australian emergency officials warned residents not to play in floodwaters after Cyclone Debbie hit the Queensland coast.
And they had good reason after they published photos of a dead bull shark that washed up on a storm-flooded street.
Bull sharks are known for being one of the more aggressive species of sharks and are responsible for most of the serious shark attacks in Florida. In April 2016, a diver off Riviera Beach in South Florida was attacked by a 7-foot bull shark.
But the reason for the concern in Australia and in other parts of the world about bull sharks is they are able to survive in both saltwater and freshwater near high population areas, according to National Geographic.
“Because of these characteristics, many experts consider bull sharks to be the most dangerous sharks in the world. Historically, they are joined by their more famous cousins, great whites and tiger sharks, as the three species most likely to attack humans.”
According to Wikipedia, Bull sharks known to travel up the Mississippi River as far inland as Illinois.
The region is still being experiencing torrential rain and damaging gusts of wind, which have hampered relief efforts.
“We have a very, very large state here and this is a very, very big weather system that’s going to wreak havoc all the way down the coast,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.
The storm has been downgraded to a tropical low as it heads southeast towards Brisbane.
The city was drenched by a month’s worth of rain in a single day, according to meteorologists and theme parks and beaches along the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast were closed.
