Deerfoot Trail 3-vehicle crash sends 5 to hospital, say police

Five people including two children have been taken to hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Deerfoot Trail that closed the 16th avenue exit ramp.

Police believe the crash was caused by someone driving on the shoulder of Deerfoot.

EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux says the same driver may have tried to run from the scene, and was chased down by witnesses.

“Police are looking into reports there may have been a weapon or weapons involved at the scene and/or whether they may have been discarded somewhere around the location of the collision scene,” Brideaux said.

The man who tried to flee has been arrested, but police are still searching the area for a possible weapon.

Two men from a pickup truck and a woman and her kids from a mini-van all suffered non-life threatening injuries.
